About The Program

The Boston Bound Marathon Training Program is a coached, group training program which is designed to prepare the participants for the challenge of running the Boston Marathon. The program can be adapted for runners doing other spring marathons such as the National, Big Sur, Pittsburgh and Frederick Marathons. The program will consist of 2 group workouts per week. Tuesday night runs will be at the Walt Whitman High School track, and will focus on specific conditioning exercises, drills and race specific running workouts. Saturday morning runs will be held at a variety of locations, primarily starting at the Capital Crescent Trail in downtown Bethesda, and will focus on long runs of increasing distances and terrain to fully train your aerobic endurance and leg strength for the terrain of Boston. Runners will be matched with others who run at similar paces to provide appropriate training intensities for all participants.

In addition to the group runs, there will be specific educational seminars on various aspects of training, racing, nutrition and supplemental strength training for runners. Even though this will be a group program, the coaches want every participant to feel that this program will work for them individually and we encourage communication to allow us to make this program the best it can be for each runner.

In order to be ready to handle the training schedule for this program, runners should have a strong mileage base of 35-45 miles per week at the time the program begins in January in order to be able to safely build to the suggested peak mileage of 50+ miles per week, and should be able to comfortably run 12-14 miles as a long run.

The 2010 program will begin with an orientation meeting on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 10:00 am  at Georgetown Running Company located at 4461 Willard Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD 20815 (301-215-6355).Our first group workout will be on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 6:30 pm at the Whitman HS track and our first long run will be on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 7:30 am at the Capital Crescent Trail parking in downtown Bethesda at the corner of Bethesda and Woodmont Avenues across from Barnes & Noble.
